Review: The New CaciqueBody line by Lane Bryant

I had the great opportunity to be asked by Lane Bryant to review some of their new products for Cacique called “Cacique Body”. This is a new line of body care that is exclusively for Cacique. The actual products should hit the store this month or may be in stores now. The scent I received was Pinkberry. Pinkberry is a blend of cherry blossom, raspberry, and peppercorn. The two items I used were the Firm Believer Lotion and the Spray It Again Hydrating Body Mist. These products are described as:

The “Firm Believer” Smoothing Body Lotion is a lightweight sculpting seaweed extract, antioxidant blend with a jolt of caffeine and moisturizing properties.

The “Spray It Again” Hydrating Body Mist is a soft and silky formula that delivers delightful fragrances with moisturizing benefits.

My experience with these products was definitely great. I tried out the products for a few days at different times. The first time I used the Firm Believer lotion I applied it right after I got out of the shower. The lotion was smooth and cooling after being in the hot water. The lotion had great coverage and the consistency was perfect. I then sprayed on the Spray It Again Mist and it really brought out the fragrance of the product. I have to admit the smell of the Pinkberry is divine. The scent lasted me a while too! It is no surprise I live in the hot and humid area of Southern Florida. I wanted to see how the fragrance would hold up to the heat. It surpassed my expectations! The scent continued on long into the afternoon hours after being applied that morning. My robe still smells like Pinkberry and it is over a week later! I later just tried the body mist by itself, but the fragrance still was long lasting even on its own.

FYI: Parcel Forwarding From the UK

I wanted to do a quick post on a service I have just started using recently. It all started a few months ago while shopping online for plus size fashions. Since I live in South Florida, I am not close to most H&M's, a Torrid, or Forever 21. This has secluded my shopping to online. There are certain retailers who offer amazing clothes that are UK based, that just do not ship to the US yet. So I started a search to find a Parcel Forwarding service from the UK for a decent price. If you Google online you will pull up at tops 3 of them. Some of them charge a flat rate and others a monthly fee. Considering I did not shop over seas on a regular basis, I wanted to find something that would fit my shopping habits. That is when I came across Briony Buys UK.

Briony Buys UK is based out of Glasgow. It is a small blog started to help out us shoppers who longed for items from the UK that we could not get our hands on. Tell me a little bit about yourself?

My dreams of becoming a plus size model came true in early 2010 when I was signed by B&M Models in Toronto, Ontario. In less than a year I have quickly gained success modeling for plus size clothing retailers such as Lola & Gigi, Voluptuous Clothing, Sears, and Walmart. When I am not modeling, I am the online face for the popular cosmetics company BALMSHELL (www.balmshell.com).

Where are you from originally?

I am a proud Canadian girl! I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba but grew up near Toronto.

Have you always been curvy?

Always! Ever since I was little I was chubbier and taller than all of the other kids, and I took a lot of slack for it. Fortunately that little chubby girl grew up into a confident and curvaceous woman who took what she experienced as a child and turned it into the strength to accomplish something she never thought possible.

When did you decide to become a model?

I have been interested in being a model for the past 10 years. It wasn’t until about two years ago that I got serious about it.

How did you start modeling?

When I decided to take the whole modeling thing seriously, I joined Model Mayhem and looked around for a photographer. I found an amazing girl who took some incredible shots of me. I used those photos to gain myself a few freelance jobs. Those jobs got me a few more great pictures that I took to the modeling agencies. One of the agencies loved me and signed me on the spot. It was a very exciting and happy moment for me.

What is your goal as a plus size model?

Besides the personal satisfaction and the financial benefits that come from modeling, my goals are focused on making a difference for all the little girls out there whoever felt like me. So that one-day they won’t have to live in a world where they are teased because they are not thin.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

Betsey Johnson, Marc Jacobs, Anna Scholz, and many others.

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

I absolutely love it! There are so many exciting things going on right now. So many blogs, Twitter pages, Facebook pages, online magazines, models, agencies, designers, retailers, press, and events dedicated to the plus size industry. I believe this large movement has brought our collective thoughts around the world together and is building a force that cannot be reckoned with. This movement is bigger and stronger than those before and I believe it is the start to great changes in the fashion industry.

Who are some of your style icons?

Anna Nicole Smith and Marilyn Monroe. They were both so girly, curvy, and beautiful. They loved to dress up and neither was afraid to show off their curves.

Where do you draw inspiration?

Online. I love to read all sorts of plus size blogs; there are so many great bloggers online that have amazing style. I also check out the websites of different plus size retailers and see what is new and trendy.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

I have a fixation for dresses, and right now there are so many cute dresses coming out for summer in amazing fabrics, bright fun colours like hot pink, and adorned with ribbons, lace, and ruffles. I am so excited to see so many great dresses available in plus sizes right now.

If you could work with any designer, who would it be?

Betsey Johnson, I would love to help her create a full plus size line (besides her lingerie which she currently offers in plus sizes), and I would love to model for her too. And hey, having the same last name could help! :)

It would also be an honour to model for Anna Scholz, she has fantastic designs for plus size women. And I would love to model for companies such as Addition Elle, City Chic, Torrid, Pinup Girl Clothing, Lane Bryant and many others, there are so many great plus size designers and companies out there to work with.

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

Just try! You will never know until you try. I used to joke around about becoming a plus size model one day… but now I really am! And it is only because I decided to stop joking and give it a serious try.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus size model?

So much support! My friends are my biggest fans; they are always so excited when they see a new picture of me in a magazine, flyer, or catalogue. I am so lucky to know such wonderful and supportive people.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

Being from Canada, I would LOVE to model for Addition-Elle, one of Canada’s largest plus size retailers. It has been a dream of mine for many years. I would also love to break into the US, and international markets.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

The biggest challenge has been battling my inner critic. I can easily discourage myself, but I always have to remember that my agency signed me , and the client hired me for a reason; they see something special in me that they like. And that is what matters most.

What is the greatest reward?

Knowing that I have accomplished something that I never though I would do. It is like a fairy tale sometimes! :)

Shannon Hiett: Plus Size Model

Tell me a little bit about yourself? (in here you can put age, where you are from, etc.)

My name is Shannon Hiett. I am from Doylestown, PA and I manage a small construction office and pursue my passion, modeling, on the side. I have high hopes of making modeling my career in the near future. I have a sister, Stacey, who also models and a brother, Sean, who probably wants to model. The love of my life is my nephew, Ethan Fabian Hiett, who will be turning two soon. Ethan defines unconditional love for me.

Where are you from originally?

I am originally from Santa Maria, CA; however, we moved around a lot when we were younger and have spent the most time in Doylestown, PA, so I consider Doylestown my hometown.

Have you always been curvy?

For as long as I can remember, I have always felt that I am the largest person in the room. I considered myself fat and undesirable. Only in the past ten years did I begin to appreciate my body and consider myself curvy, not ugly. A size six is a shoe size to me, not a dress size.

When did you decide to become a model?

I actually wanted to be an actress; still do. So, in 2007, I auditioned for a casting company in Philly and the director told me that I looked great on camera, but couldn’t act to save my life. I went home feeling down, but not out. I was determined to revamp and try again. I received a call from a modeling agency in Philly the next day regarding a casting that they wanted me to go to and that they had received a call from the casting agency about a beautiful full figured woman.

How did you start modeling?

I went to the casting for a fit model for Mother’s Work (now Destination Maternity) and booked the gig. I began fit modeling and held that booking for a year until I switched to another agency in Philly. After that first booking, I was hooked and I wanted to know more and be more, so I began researching like a mad woman.

What is your goal as a plus size model?

Stacey and I have a combined goal as plus size models and that is to make women appreciate their bodies for just as they are. It took

Who are some of your favorite designers?

Straight size designers that I’d love to see create a full figured line are: DVF, Chanel, Oscar de la Renta, Louis Vuitton. I wish Alexander McQueen had done a full figured line as well.

My current full figured favorites are: City Chic, ASOS Curve, I.N.C., B&Lu, Pure Energy, & Monif C.

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

I think people in the high fashion world feel as if plus size models/fashions are a fad. The thing is, there have always been full figured women. Look at Marilyn Monroe. Curves are here to stay and if the designers that refuse to do a full figured line miss the curve (pun intended), then it will be their loss. The majority of the women that I associate with on a day-to-day basis are full figured. They are also willing to spend money on quality clothing that is fashion forward and fits well. Why designers refuse to see this is beyond me.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

My favorite fashion trend in this moment is leggings; mainly because they always fit, they’re forgiving, and they hug my curves. I hope they don’t go out of style any time soon!

If you could work with any designer, who would it be?

Oscar de la Renta. The designs are timeless.

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

I get this question a lot and I’m actually flattered that aspiring models feel I am successful enough to give advice. My advice is to start small and local. Do not take the leap and move to NYC if you are not 100% certain this is an industry in which you want to work or if this industry even wants to work with you.

Find a local agency and a local photographer (there are plenty on Model Mayhem) and do a test shoot where you can get a quality headshot and full length body shot. Then find out if your agency has an open call and take the photos to the open call.

I feel you have a better shot at being noticed if you have another model from the same agency submit your photos/measurements on your behalf. If a model says they’ve worked with you, it gives you credibility. These agencies receive electronic submissions daily and the agents do not have time to pore over each one.

Do not say “no” to working for free. Networking is priceless in this industry. You never know who you will meet and what they can do for you and vice versa. Always be pleasant and never get a big head about the accomplishments you achieve because this industry can knock you right back down in a matter of moments. You are replaceable. Remember that. There is always a younger, fresher, more eager girl willing to take your place.

Don’t sell yourself short either. There is a point where one should begin charging a rate for their services. You are selling their clothes, after all. The designers are making money off of you and it is only fair that you be paid for services rendered, especially if you are experienced.

My sister, Stacey, and I are each other’s biggest fans. It is so nice to have someone so close to you in the same industry. We share experiences, learn, and grow together. And we are honest with one another. Stacey helps me out tremendously and keeps me grounded.

We get really excited when we can work together and we’ve loved meeting so many wonderful new friends in the industry. The friends we’ve made give us unconditional support and that’s a fabulous feeling.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

As a sister due, we’ve created Team Hiett and are working on an effort to bring body awareness and appreciation to women out there who desire to be comfortable in their own skin. We have created a blog (http://teamhiett.tumblr.com/ ) and have a website coming, along with a few other opportunities in the works.

Personally, I hope to make my dream my career.

What is the greatest reward?

The greatest reward came when I was doing an informal modeling gig at Nordstorm’s and a woman about a size four approached me and said that she wished she had my figure. I was dumbstruck that a thin woman would want my body. That made me feel really good and appreciate what I have been blessed with even more.

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

I am 33 years old and was born and raised in Philadelphia. I am a Latina mix(Puerto Rican & Dominican parents). I am a spoken word recording artist known as Poetikmind, freelance plus model, writer, teacher and also the Curvy Confidence Editor for Daily Venus Diva. I am happily married with kids.

Where are you from originally?

Have you always been curvy?

By today’s standards of what curvy is I would say yes!

When did you decide to become a model?

I have always wanted to try modeling because many people told me I was tall enough for it growing up however I didn’t think anyone would consider me because I was not skinny enough. I never knew about plus modeling or that it even existed until I was inspired by seeing photos of real full figured women modeling Ashley Stewart clothing in one of their stores while shopping and I thought to myself “that could be me.” It really helped to boost my confidence to pursue modeling.

How did you start modeling?

I started modeling by first doing my research online and I found Venus Diva and Plus Model Magazine. These websites gave me almost all of the information that I needed to get started. I immediately started testing with photographers to create my own portfolio and after that I started looking for modeling opportunities that suit me best.

What is your goal as a plus size model?

To dispel the stereotypes and limitations that society puts on the full figured woman and to encourage women to love themselves just as they are. There is nothing wrong with losing weight because you are seeking to get healthier but there are many thick girls that are totally healthy too. It is important to have a positive self-image because if you don’t love yourself then you won’t be true to yourself and the world would be missing out on whatever unique thing you bring to it just by being and loving you. We can’t look and be like any other person, so why try.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

There are so many wonderful designers out there but I am really in love with fashions from Ashley Stewart, Monif C, Qristyl Frazier, Igigi & Kiyonna just to name a few. If I could afford anything from the following designers and they catered to full figured women, it would be: Valentino, Dior & Chloe. I love feminine clothing and these designers really deliver in that area!

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

It feels like a movement because something is actually happening…progress. I am seeing trendier fashions available for plus sized women and more about “loving your curves” in magazines, blogs and on websites. It feels good to know that we no longer have to walk to the back of a clothing store to only find two racks of ugly, ill fitting clothes. The plus sized fashions available seem to be cut better now to fit our different shapes and I love that we are being offered some of the same styles that normally were only available for our skinny sisters. I love the progress we are making and think we are headed in the right direction.

Who are some of your style icons?

I don’t really have any, lol. I just like what I like.

Where do you draw inspiration?

I draw inspiration from other plus models and seeing how different shaped full figured women wear their clothes and I pick up styling ideas from them but I usually do what works for me. I like classic pieces mixed with trendy styles to keep my look up to date without spending a lot of money.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

I love the jegging because it is comfortable and it hugs every curve in a very forgiving way BUT it is very hard to get them everywhere in a plus sized tall. I also love pencil skirts, I wish I had one in every color because it compliments my shape.

If you could work with any designer, who would it be?

I would love to work with Monif C because she seems friendly and she understands women’s curves being full figured herself.

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

Love yourself, be true to yourself and have fun with it. Do your research online and read Plus Model Magazine and check out Daily Venus Diva’s online community where you can ask questions about modeling. Try to meet as many people in the industry as you can. Practice in the mirror and study poses in ads or online. Test often with photographers. Learn how to do your own makeup, you never know when you may need this. Save some money and invest in building your portfolio. Look for opportunities to model and agencies that represent plus sized women.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus size model?

Yes my husband and family and everyone I have met so far in plus modeling industry and community have been extremely supportive.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

I would love to get signed to an agency because I believe it will get me one step closer to becoming an Ashley Stewart model which is my dream. I also would love to do more commercial/lifestyle modeling. I’ve always loved fashion shows and up until this point, have only been in one so I would love to walk on the runway as well maybe at FFF week? We’ll see.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

Even though I don’t feel 100% all the time, I feel good to know that I have overcome insecurities that I still had about my body and look. When I first started modeling I used to compare myself a lot to other models and realized there were still a lot of insecurities there that I had to let go of completely. It’s funny because sometimes different situations reveal things about yourself to you. I can say that I am now totally confident in who I am and am thankful to God to just be me.

What is the greatest reward?

I feel like I have accomplished something big in my life. I took a chance on something that I wasn’t sure that I could do because I never saw it for me but always wanted it. One of the greatest rewards is the boost in self confidence that I now have, it translates into every area of my life. I know that I am fearfully and wonderfully made and God is worthy to be praised for it all.

One Stop Plus Fashion..... Show

At 1 p.m. today around 600 people eagerly waited on the One Stop Plus website for a glimpse of their Fashion Show for their Fall 2011 collection. We excitedly waited, many of us showed up over 15 minutes early and chatted while we waited for it to come on. Our expectations were high from the fact that we enjoyed their fashion show last year. As the video loaded the reactions from the viewers were definitely mixed. While it was a "fashion show" by definition, it was not a live runway. The video had been prerecorded and edited. I am not sure if people actually showed up at Time's Square today to see the show, but I hope that they at least had it up on jumbo screens. Okay, so now the pros and con's of the show.

Pros:

There was some great colors. Lots of vibrant blues, reds, and purples. A pop of green in there as well.
Fabrics with burnout prints. It was hard to see the exact detail, but some of the cutout did add intrigue to simple garments.
The dresses towards the end were very elegant and offered almost a red carpet option for plus size beauties.
I did like the bracelets and necklace pieces they used. Not sure they are part of the collection, but they were interesting and tied in.

Con's:

There was a definite lack of shape in the collection. I liked the look of some of the draping, but many silhouettes will have to be created to give the item structure.
Lack of diversity in the models- Not much of a fashion show with one model, doing all the looks. (But as I said, it was prerecorded)
There was a lot of velvety looking fabrics. This is a great for a piece or two, but I am not sure it rang well with the customers viewing the collection.

Designer Shoes at Payless a Flop?

I am writing this post with a sad heart. Last September, my excitement was peaked by the reveal of Payless shoes on the runway designed by Christian Siriano. It was the premier of his Spring 2011 collection for Payless. After his show pictures were all over the blogging world buzzing with excitement. Myself personally was stoked by the idea that these high fashion shoes were going to be first off easily available to average people such as myself and also somewhat affordable. Now let's get this clear now, I was not expecting them to be dirt cheap. I was however expecting to be wowed for affordable prices. I have been stalking Payless for the last month or so waiting for the reveal of the collection. Well, today is the day that the Payless Designer Collections are on the website and I have to say............ well let me show you.

How do we go from <-- to -->

Okay these are similar, not as drastic, but definitely muted down!

Once again, why did we mute the shoes?? I mean come on, keep some of the fashionable integrity.

All in all I am sad that Payless felt the need to in my words "dumb down" the collection. I was excited about the crazy heels and styles. I was WILLING to pay for the fashion. This was a great opportunity for Payless to expand their clientele. Le sigh. Out of all the designer's shoes that are featured on the website, there are maybe 2 shoes in total I would even think about purchasing. Has anyone else checked them out? What do you think?

Stacey Hiett: Plus Size Model

I am very excited to have an opportunity to introduce you to Stacey Hiett! She is an amazing Plus Size Model and many of you have probably see her on websites and pictures from events!

Tell me a little bit about yourself.

Well, I am 25 years old and I hail from Philadelphia Pennsylvania. I am incredibly shy around people I just meet and incredibly out-going around people I am close to. I am very close with my family and my favorite person walking this earth is my 2 year old nephew. Also, if I wasn’t pursuing modeling, I’d love to be a cop!

Where are you from originally?

I was in born in Denver, Colorado. I moved around a lot as a kid so I no recollection of that state.

Have you always been curvy?

I’ve always had shape. I didn’t recognize my curves until I was in my early teens, and I didn’t appreciate them until I was in my early 20’s. Now, I refuse to let them go : )

When you did you decide to become a model?

I think most women growing up would love to be a model. Who doesn’t practice posing in front of the mirror? I decided to pursue modeling when I realized it was something I loved to do and it was something that people appreciated. When you pursue something as a career, you have to love it and know that you do it well.

How did you start modeling?

When I was younger, a talent scout approached me at a football game. It turned out to be a scam in the long run, but it put the idea of modeling in my head. It wasn’t until years later when my older sister, Shannon, wanted to give modeling a try, that I went a long for the ride. We signed with a local Philly agent, and things started to take off from there.

What is one of your goals as a plus model?

One of my goals as a plus model is to make women realize that they can be beautiful at any size. We as women are put on a pedestal to look and act a certain way to society’s standards. But at the end of the day, it’s what we have in the inside that counts.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

I love Marc Jacobs, Dolce and Gabana, Betsy Johnson, and Victoria Beckham. I also love those who design for H&M and Urban Outfitters.

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

I think some designers have no idea how much money they could be making if they catered to plus size women. We are slowly creeping up on the industry and very shortly will be making our mark. The average woman is not a size 0 or 2, so why do we solely focus on that size? Once the flood gates open on the plus industry, you will not be able to stop us.

Who are some of your style icons?

I love effortless and comfortable style. Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Beyonce, and Rihanna. I also love the style of my two favorite plus icons, Mia Amber and Fluvia Lacerda.

Where do you draw inspiration?

I draw inspiration on those who are already successful in this business. Whenever I work with Mia or Fluvia, my eyes are glued to their poses. Their professionalism, and their fluency while modeling is incredible. Plus, they are genuinely nice people which makes it better.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

I love bright colors and form fitting dresses. I have a bright red wrap dress I bought on sale at Target years ago and it fits like a glove. I always receive pleasant compliments each time I wear it out.

If you could work with any designer, who would it be?

I’d love to work with Christian Siriano. He is beyond talented and makes amazing pieces.

If you could give advice to other aspiring models, what would it be?

This business is a rollercoaster ride. You will have highs and you will have lows so you have to be fully confident and prepared for whatever may come your way. Do not feel discouraged and do not be taken advantage of. It is okay to say no. Also, realize that there’s always a time and place for you to shine, so never feel jealous of others success. Do your research and pay close attention to those are successful in this business. They will have a lot to teach you. And most importantly, enjoy yourself.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus model?

My sister is my biggest support and I am hers. It’s nice to have someone in the same business because she gets it. My mom has shrine of us at work, and quite frankly I think my brother has no interest in my job (lol). I’ve received a lot of advice from some really great people in this business and I will forever be thankful for that.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

I’d love to work with some great photographers and designers in the future. Combining our talents and making a huge dent on this industry. I have a lot to accomplish as a plus size model and I am just getting started!

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

I think the biggest challenge you have to overcome is being at peace with yourself. You have to love who you are and what you stand for. You will not survive in this business if you are not confident.

What is the greatest reward?

The greatest reward is when women of all ages reach out to me and tell me how I inspire them. I am incredibly grateful to be given this opportunity and I never take it for granted.

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

Where do you draw inspiration? I draw inspiration from my mom, my daughter, and my mentor and great friend Daphne.

Is there any designers you would love to model for?

I would love to model for any of them that support plus size models. If I had to choose it would be Gucci, Ed Hardy, or Mrs. Kimora Lee Simmons Hounsou.

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

I would advise them to stay true to what they want out of life and be willing to work hard nothing comes easy. Stay dedicated!

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

I love the pea coats, military coats and style.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus size model?

I have my lovely Face of Curve Appeal (FOCA) sisters and friends that support me.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

I want to do fashion shows all over the world and inspire other women to do as I am if that’s what they want. Put on some of my own plus size shows.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

I have to say the biggest challenge is finding my passion again after the sudden death of my mom. She would want me to be happy and modeling makes me happy.

Being Proactive

A book I am reading right now is helping me a lot. However, the subject of being proactive came up and it brought a question to my mind. What exactly is considered being proactive? In my mind, being proactive was trying to take the next step or doing something without being asked. Apparently being proactive with life can encompass so many other aspects. The book spoke about being proactive with your thinking, how you react to people, with your language, and also with life. The opposite to being proactive is being reactive. So it got me to thinking, am I proactive or am I reactive? As it continued to describe the qualities of a reactive person, I knew what category I fit into. I was always so easily annoyed by others, always worried about things I could not control, defeatus with my language, and never took responsibility for the choices I made. In the end, I was not happy as a reactive person. I had a choice in life. I could choose to be happy or not. I could choose how other's actions would make me feel. Life is all about choices. Here are some goals I am going to try this month to become a more proactive person:

1. Use positive proactive language (i.e.: I choose to go to work, I will be successful, I can do it)
2. Stop letting other's actions affect my mood
3. Stop making excuses for my actions and start resolving problems

This is just the first step in the right direction. I am know it will be easy because I have chosen to change.

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

My name is LaKeshia “Le’Shya Marie” Collins and I am a 33 year old single mother. I live a full time life and my 10 year old son makes sure that doesn’t stop. I love reading, spending time with friends and family and I love the ocean. I enjoy life…the sunshine and the rain. I read once that every encounter is an experience of growth. I live by that and I thank God for it all.

Where are you from originally?

I’m originally from Augusta, GA. I was born there but I’m a military brat so I was able to travel and experience living in different places.

Have you always been curvy?

Yes, pretty much for the most part. When I was in middle school I went from a size 3 to a 9 in one summer and the rest is history.

What is your goal as a plus size model?

My goal as a plus size model is to inspire, motivate and encourage plus size women. I want them to be comfortable with who they are and to know that they are beautiful in the skin they are in.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

I can’t say I have any favorite designers. I wear what looks good on me.

How did you start modeling?

I started modeling when I lived in Germany. I was a part of a modeling club at my middle school. We did still modeling at the PX and other places. I did several fashion shows as well living on military bases. I knew then this is something I like doing.

Who are some of your style icons?

One of them I would have to say is Queen Latifah. She is always so curvalicious and prettiful! LOL no seriously, she is always dressed very classy and rarely do I see her wearing fashion don’t. She can rock a classy evening gown to the Grammy’s or a nice pair of liquid tights with a nice top and boots and still look awesome! She’s a beautiful plus size woman and she has the confidence. I love it!

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

I think it’s wonderful. I think the industry is starting to recognize that most women don’t look like those size 2 women in the commercials. When you give women something they can identify with they are more susceptible to it.

Where do you draw inspiration?

I draw inspiration from my son. He is the reason I breathe. Even as a toddler he would tell me things like mama you’re so pretty or you look beautiful today! He’s the sweetest. He’s my #1 fan!

Is there any designers you would love to model for?

This may sound crazy but I would love to model for PZI jeans only because I didn’t meet their height requirements. That was so funny to me but they wanted me to buy their jeans. I’m curvy enough but not tall enough? Wow!

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

Be confident in yourself and be able to take criticism whether it’s constructive or destructive!

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

I love sweater dresses with tights and a nice pair of boots. It’s perfect for the winter time and it’s still sexy.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus size model?

Not as much support as I would like but that’s okay. That motivates me even more. The ones who don’t support me now will later. No doubt in my mind about that! J

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

I hope to show young women that modeling does not require you to be half naked and wearing less clothes does not define your beauty. If that’s what you like to do that’s fine but it’s not a must. I just want to inspire others and show them that they don’t have to compromise who they are to be successful.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

I would have to say being comfortable with me. Yes, I weigh a little more than the “ideal model” and I’m a little shorter too but that’s okay. I have learned to accept me. I got up close and personal with myself and found out who I was. No one does me better than me.

What is the greatest reward?

The greatest reward is the self esteem boost. Sometimes I go back and look at some of my shoots and say to myself girl you are the bomb.com! LOL I have to keep myself encouraged.

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

I’m a 37 year old mom, wife, daughter, model, mentor, and mogul. I have lived in the Augusta, GA area for the past 13 years.

Where are you from originally?

I’m originally from Erie, PA

Have you always been curvy?

Yes I have.

What is your goal for curvy women?

My goal for curvy women is just basically to encourage them to embrace their curves and be happy with the body that The Almighty gave them.

How did you start modeling?

I started modeling when my husband and I decided to create a promotions team made up of aspiring models from the Augusta, GA area to help promote the events being hosted by our entertainment company, Kismet Entertainment. When I started posting pictures of our photo shoots, people were always commenting on how I held my own against the “skinny” models. That was never really my goal to start modeling, I just liked to do it for fun.

Who are some of your style icons?

I love Rihanna, Pink, Fergie, Eve, and Amber Rose’s styles.

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

I’ve been heavily involved in the plus size movement in the fashion industry for about 2 years now, and I have seen the LEAPS that have been made. With organizations like Project Curve Appeal, and events with the magnitude that Full Figured Fashion Week has brought the plus size community to the forefront of the fashion industry in the past few years is amazing. I do believe that everyone is beginning to recognize that we are a force to be reckoned with.

Where do you draw inspiration?

The answer to this question use to be my kids. And though that is still where a lot of my inspiration comes from, over the past few months, I’ve been redefining, realigning, and realizing my purpose. So now my answer to that question is EVERYONE that I come in contact with is my inspiration. I do a lot of networking, I am a mentor to young ladies, and some kind of way, I’ve been a mentoring to adult women. My husband has been telling me for years that I’ve been in denial about my charge and I’ve really began accepting it these last few months.

If you could give advice to other curvy women, what would it be?

To not just love yourself, but to be in love with yourself.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

The fashion trends that are happening right now are the trends I grew up with in the 90’s. But my personal favorite is a pair of blue jeans, layered tank tops with a jacket over it, ankle boots, and accessories.

How do you help people with their image?

This is somewhat of a new area for me. Right now I am only into the styling part of images. But I do plan to work in more areas directly. I have been working with a friend for the past few months, in which I’ve been helping her tap into her purpose in life and finding her niche. We all have one, some of us just don’t know what we are “meant” to be doing, or how to get started.

What is Curve Appeal?

Curve Appeal is a movement. Project Curve Appeal which is the full name, was founded by Bev Wilson, and it was created to empower and uplift women sizes 12-26. We promote health & wellness, fashion & beauty, and more. The Faces of Curve Appeal (FOCA) are Spokes Models for the movement.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors?

Yes I do. I have a very supportive family, and my children are definitely advocates for their mother. LOL

What are your hopes in the future for your career?

Business wise I’m sure my hopes are similar to everyone else that is in business, to be successful. But I see myself with more than just a career in the business aspect, I have a career in mentoring and making a difference in lives, and my hopes for that is to always to try and maintain a positive position that people can mirror for themselves. I’m human, I make mistakes, but the key is to learn from those mistakes and turn them into something positive.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome?

The biggest challenge I’ve overcome would be learning how to deal with the molestation I went through as a young girl. I was molested by my mother’s husband from the time I was 11 until I was 14, and getting over the fact that my mother never believed me.

What is the greatest reward?

The greatest reward for me is when someone inboxes me on FB or sends me an email and tells me how much I inspire them. I honestly, do everything I’m doing because I believe in it. And if helping and inspiring people is a part of that, then so be it. My most recent greatest reward was when the number game was going around on Facebook, my daughter said, that I’m the best mom a girl could have, and that I’m a great role model. I cried.

2011 Goals Pt. 1

One of my goals for 2011 is to get more comfortable with taking pictures of myself. I still struggle with looking at pictures of myself in more recent years and seeing beauty. I know it is all a mental thing, so I am working on it. Also, trying to overcome the fear of worrying about what other people think. I need to love myself. I whipped out my tripod and got some practice shooting some photos. I am hoping that as I get used to setting them up I will actually become comfortable with OOTD photos. So here is my first self-portrait for 2011.

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

My name is Nastassja Howard. I am 24 years old.

Have you always been curvy?

Yes I have. I can honestly say I was not always comfortable in my own skin, but over the years I have grown to love and embrace my curves.

What is your goal as a plus size model?

My goal as a plus size model is to help young girls and women who look like me acquire the confidence I now have. Growing up, I saw that society always portrayed the definition of beauty as skinny. because I was not skinny I couldn't identify myself as beautiful. Luckily for me I grew up in a family full of Plus Size Vixens who were more than willing to teach me otherwise. I want to serve as a role model for the girls who don’t have the kind of support system that I had.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

I love so many different designers. Monif C, Kiyonna, Lane Bryant, Jibri, Ashley Stewarts, IGIGI., Dereon.... the list goes on and on.

Where are you from originally?

I am originally from Brooklyn NY later relocating to Nanuet NY in Rockland County. I also spent a few years in Philadelphia, PA while attending school.

How did you start modeling?

I actually kind of just stumbled into it. A plus size boutique called Kurvacious opened in my city so I went to the store and spoke to the owner (LaTeffany Scott) about modeling for the store. It just kind of took of from there. I ended up falling in love, convinced that if I could do this for the rest of my life I would be happy. Now I’m working to make that dream a reality.

Who are some of your style icons?

I am inspired by individuals who don’t follow trends. I believe you should wear things because they make you feel beautiful and comfortable and not because everyone else is wearing it. Individuals like Mia Amber Davis, Jazmine Sullivin, Tyra Banks, Beyonce all reflect different styles that I love.

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

I am very happy to see all of the plus size movements being made in the industry. I love that plus size women are being recognized and appreciated instead of ridiculed and looked down upon. I think the fashion industry has begun to realize that real women have curves and are finally embracing that. I believe that we still have a long way to go, but this is definitely an amazing start.

Where do you draw inspiration?

I draw inspiration from my group of supporters. From my father driving me around to castings, my mom traveling to late night photo shoots, my brothers and sis-in-law helping me with clothing choices and pointers. Not to mention the tons of family and friends cheering me on from the sidelines. I have a dream team behind me lol. I want to make them proud and show them that all the hard work that they put in was not done in vain.

Is there any designers you would love to model for?

I would love to model for Monif C. That would be a dream come true.

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

I think its very important to research and network. You have to understand what your getting into and to map out a plan. I would also suggest working on a great portfolio. Work with different photographers and MUA’s, try different looks. I also think its important to be patient. Even the individuals titled an “over night success” put in tons of work before their big break. You have to love doing what you do but don’t forget to ENJOY YOURSELF AND HAVE FUN WHILE DOING IT. :-)

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

I’m a big fan of accessories. I believe the right shoes, bag, etc can make or break your outfit. I also love leggings. They are a must have in my wardrobe.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus size model?

Boy do I. lol As I stated before my entire family is behind me on this. I have so many supporters it hard to keep count. My best friend has been a huge help as well. I’m very blessed. I know not too many people can say that they have the kind of support system that I have.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

My goals are to sign with a plus model agency. I want to model for every plus size designer possible. I’d love to travel the world walking the runway and eventually I’d would love to start my own plus size clothing line.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

I believe the biggest challenge I had to overcome was the fight within myself. My own insecurities. I was not always happy with the way I looked. It took an eye-opening conversation with a great friend (M.R. <3) for me to realize that it was ok to just be me. That being Nastassja was a wonderful thing. I am forever grateful for that.

What is the greatest reward?

The greatest reward is being an example to other girls and showing them that it is possible. If I can inspire one person to use every negative comment thrown their way and use it to motivate them to follow their dreams (whatever they may be) I am happy.

Just sittin up in my room

2010 has been on hell of a year. Of course every year starts out the same, with me swearing that this is going to be my year. I have yet to have a year that goes well completely. However, despite some of the bad things that have gone on over the last 12 months, there have been a lot of great things. Also, moments that at a time were bad, have shown their silver lining. I have learned a lot from 2010 about myself, what I want, and where I am going in life. I know that 2011 will reap its own lessons, but I am sitting here in my room listening to the breeze from the Florida wind come through my cracked window and I cannot help but reminisce on the whirlwind that was 2010. Although it is not quite over yet, with a little more than a week left, I am still pleased with 2010. I have lost friends, but reconnected with others. This has taught me that friendship is not always what you expect. That you can take a whole gaggle of unrelated people and build a family. I have also learned that true love survives even the worst situations. Also, that when you think love is over, it can often revive itself or even start over. Not saying that there are no regrets with 2010, because I definitely have some, but I appreciate everything it has taught me. So I toast a glass to 2010. Cheers good friend, you shall be missed.

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

Well, My name is Nina Taylor, I am 26 and I am from Washington DC. I work full time in Continuing Medical Education in Oncology and Virology. I am also the Washington DC delegate in the 2011 Miss Plus America Pageant. My pageant platform is HIV awareness, prevention and supportive care. I love to travel and meet new people. Modeling is my craft and my creative release.

Have you always been curvy? Always!

When I was 12 I was a size 12. When I was younger, I didn’t appreciate my curves as much as I do now.

What is your goal as a plus size model?

I started modeling by accident. So I never had a set goal I just went with it. As I am going through the process I am setting small goals for myself. Right now it’s to be published and hopefully agency represented.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

I have an ever expanding collection of Monif C, Igigi, Kiyonna, ASOS Curve and Trentacosta. I love classy, feminine pieces. These designers are curvy conscious and I always get compliments on my outfits.

Where are you from originally?

I was born and for the most part raised in Washington DC. I spent several years in North Carolina and 4 years in Pittsburgh PA working on my BA.

How did you start modeling?

I get asked this question a lot. I was working as a make up artist for a straight size model. The photographer needed to test lights and he asked me on set. He shot 10 frames and told me they were perfect. He told me that I “belong in front of the camera, not behind it.” He offered to do my first set of prints and from there I just kept with it. Sometimes other people see things in you, that you might not necessarily see in yourself.

Who are some of your style icons?

I am a fan of anything vintage. I loved Audrey Hepburn’s and Bette Davis style. Jill Scott, Rachel Zoe, Sarah Jessica Parker and of course our first lady Michelle O!

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

It’s about time! Fashion and modeling has been very exclusionary, kind of like an “us” and “them” culture. Designers are starting to take a look at the vast population of women who are not a size 2, and in turn women are starting to feel good about themselves regardless of the number on the inside of their jeans. We still have a ways to go on the fashion and entertainment front, but at least now there is a movement. We are in the midst of a curvy revolution because a woman who is a size 18 has the same green money as a woman that is a size 0 and I am sure Karl Lagerfeld can take that size 0 dress sketch and stretch it to an 18. Oh well, it’s more fabric, I think the curvy population has proven that they will pay top dollar to stay fashionable. I have to admit that I’ve been buying more and more clothes online from the UK than anywhere else. Their plus size collections are classic, trendy and fashionable. I don’t mind, I am getting better at converting my American Dollars into Euro’s and I will continue to do so. We will find fashion for our curves at any cost.

Where do you draw inspiration?

I am inspired by Black and White movies, anything Vintage glam, various pieces of art and other plus models and superplusmodels.

Is there any designers you would love to model for?

Monif C and Igigi. Love their designs and their commitment to plus size fashion. I would also love to model for Marc Jacobs and this may be farfetched but Chanel. I can’t wait for the day to get an amazing plus size Chanel Suit.

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

The first piece of advice is to do your research. Knowing what steps to take to begin, getting to know the industry and the key players, what you need and what is expected of you. The second is to take care of your “product” make sure you exercise regularly, and present yourself in a professional manner. The third is just something that drives photographers, MUAs and designers crazy. Be on-time! Don’t flake. Their time is just as valuable as yours. Once you damage those relationships it’s hard to repair.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

I am in love with the military inspired coats, boots and purses. I am a big fan of leggings, sequins and chunky jewelry.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus size model?

I do have a lot of support. My Dad and my brothers have been there for me every step of the way. My Dad has turned into quite the critic and sometimes my older brother will join me on set. I also have quite a few people I’ve worked with that share my same vision. Creative and Styling extraordinaire Qevn E. Arr, Fantastic photographers such as Maria Georgieva, Joe Crocetta, Oriana Layendecker and Davida Baldwin. My makeup maven’s Aicha Lahlou, Cici Richardson. Everything they touch turns to gold and I am very lucky to have worked with them over and over.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

I hope to continue to pave the way for some other marvelous women. I’d also loved to be agency represented and kick down some doors that aren’t opening for plus size women.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

Every plus size girl with a pretty face thinks they are a plus size model. So it makes the industry saturated. 80% of the battle is sticking out among the masses. I’ve had the opportunity to network with designers, photographers and other like minded people to create a niche for myself. It’s a lot of work and effort but I am dedicated to my craft.

What is the greatest reward?

I am very happy to once again be able to interview a beautiful plus size model. Kumiko Ming embodies everything a beautiful curvy model should be.

Tell me a little bit about yourself? (in here you can put age, where you are from, etc.)

My name is Kumiko Ming which is Japanese for “Eternal Beautiful Child, but I am better yet known as “The Jamaican Bombshell.” I am a plus size fashion model that has been modeling for over 8 years now.

Have you always been curvy?

For as long as I can remember.

What is your goal as a plus size model?

My goal is to show the world that everything beautiful doesn’t only come in a size 0 or 2. Also to show women of all shapes and sizes that they too can be sexy regardless of what the media may portray and to love their bodies unconditionally.

Who are some of your favorite designers?

A few of my favorite designers consist of Kimora Lee Simmons-Hounsou, Miu Miu and Alexander McQueen just to name a few.

Where are you from originally?

I am of Jamaican descent but lived in South Florida for majority of my life, currently residing in Tampa Bay, FL.

How did you start modeling?

At the age of 13 I went to Barbizon Modeling School in South Florida after discovering my new found love. They wanted too much money for something that my mother felt should be given to you for your natural abilities and not paid for to try and mold you into something that isn’t guaranteed. From there I did things on the side like school fashion shows. I went from agency to agency in which I wasted thousands of dollars but gained valuable knowledge in which the more agencies I went to the more I knew what to look out for and put less money in their pockets. I did that until about the age of 18, that’s when I decided to take all the knowledge I had gained from the industry and become a freelance model.

Who are some of your style icons?

Some of my style icons would consist of Kimora Lee Simmons-Hounsou, Betsy Johnson and Fergie.

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

The plus size movement is slowly taking the fashion industry by storm. We’re starting to be recognized and acknowledge for who we are rather than looked down upon. The industry is starting to realize that plus size depicts a more realistic image of the consumers since the average woman is a size 14.

Where do you draw inspiration?

I have what you call a self-inspiration. Modeling and fashion is something that I sleep, eat and breathe so I take it very seriously. When I get messages from other plus size women, men or just people in general telling me how I inspire them to be more confident or to pursue their modeling career it gives me a great feeling and makes me feel like I am accomplishing what I set out to do. Overall I get inspired by all successful people whether it’s in fashion, music, acting or whatever. Watching people that once had a dream and they put in the hard work and dedication as I do and finally made it to where they wanted to inspires me and gives me a good feeling to keep on going.

Is there any designers you would love to model for?

I would love to model for Kimora Lee Simmons-Hounsou.

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

My advice would be to do what makes you happy. You can’t go around trying to please everyone because in reality you can’t; someone will always have an issue with what you do. If you love what you do and you’re good at it then go for it. Take all negative comments that you may receive in life and find a positive. Find ways on using the negatives as a way of improving to get even better.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

My favorite fashion trend right now is the Punk’d trend by designers like Jean Paul Gaultier.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus size model?

Yes, I do. My family has always been supportive in everything that I do even if it only lasted 5 minutes. They cheer for me every step of the way.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

My future right now is looking very promising and bright. I plan to branch out into the acting world as well as introduce my upcoming lingerie line and hair accessory collection.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

The biggest challenge I would have to say has been not letting negative experiences both personal and business affect my ability to produce. As a model you will go through many challenges such as weight issues, criticism and peer/business pressures just to name a few. As long as you have certain values that you stick by and not let people in the industry break you and transform you into a person you aren’t then everything will be fine. Every successful person has a few horror stories of what they had to go through to get to where they are now, but not being sucked into that black hole along the journey and still reaching your ultimate goal will always be a much better feeling.

What is the greatest reward?

The greatest reward to me would have to be all the people that I have motivated and inspired to accomplish their dreams. There’s no greater feeling than to know that you’ve inspired people through your work.

Recently I had the pleasure of getting to know a beautiful upcoming plus size model Kimmi. Our plus size community is a part of a great turning point in fashion. More plus size models are starting to get their much deserved limelight. Kimmi is a beautiful curvy girl, who I know we will be seeing more of in the near future.

Tell me a little bit about yourself?

Hi I am Kim Smith “Kimmi” I am 28.

Where are you from originally?

I was born in St Louis, Mo. I left at age 17 and moved to Nashville, TN.

Have you always been curvy?

YES I have!

What is your goal as a plus size model?

My goals are to become a successful plus size model, ripping the runway for top designers, to become a campaign model, spokesperson for several organizations, featured in magazines, have my own clothing line, open a plus size boutique, and to inspire women all over.

Who are some of your favorite designers/stores?

I have a lot of designers that I heart. I love a local designer out of Nashville, TN DMichelle Designs, I love Evans Clothing, Monif C., I love Torrid, Lane Bryant, Ashley Stewarts. I have so many.

How did you start modeling?

I basically started modeling by contacting a photographer. After we talked, she basically told me that I needed a portfolio and that I needed to create a profile on Model Mayhem. Well a week after I created my profile, I received a message from a photographer Chris Hollis, and he wanted to book me for a shoot. I also kept going to casting calls networking with other models, and designers. I learned photographers and designers were very important. I also found me a modeling coach (Susan Hunter) and we basically went over my walk, how to pose for the camera, and how to prepare myself for casting calls.

Who are some of your style icons?

I love Beyonce’s style, Tocorra Jones, Mia Tyler, Tyra Banks, and the list goes on. I am inspired by women who are not afraid of being them selves.

What is your take on the plus size movement in the fashion industry?

I wish there was a little more for the plus size industry, but over all I am pleased. I feel like people are finally catching on to the plus size community but we still have a ways to go. We have the Curvy Revolution that is a great movement, Full Figure Fashion Week, Curve Appeal Celebrates the Plus Size Community, and lots more. So I feel like we are moving in the right direction and it is all positive.

Where do you draw inspiration?

I draw inspiration from people who have come from a back ground like me and have made it. I also get inspired by family. I want to get my mom a nice house, or do something nice for my family.

Is there any designers you would love to model for?

YES Monif C. I LOVE her!!!

If you could give advice to other aspiring plus size models, what would it be?

My advice to all aspiring models, is to 1st learn the business. You can google anything you want to know about modeling, 2nd build a portfolio, 3rd stay focus only on great things and remain patient.

What is your favorite fashion trend right now?

Right now I have been wearing leggings with a simple top and some hot boots. I am very simple when it comes to dressing, but am always very trendy.

Do you have a lot of support in your endeavors to be a plus size model?

Sometimes I feel like I have lots of support until I get some good news that I would like to share and it seems like smiles are fake and I am happy for you seems really dry. But over all I do have family that supports me and that is more than enough for me.

What are your hopes in the future for your career as a model?

My hopes are to sign with a plus size agency, I would like to travel all over for top designers, just have a house hold name, and again be an inspiration.

What is the biggest challenge you have overcome being a model?

The biggest challenge I have over came as a model, was to get over my insecurities. Growing up I did not like myself, and I always cried looking in the mirror. I was always teased in school. I finally have grown to love myself, and take pride in my weight, skin color and past hurts.

What is the greatest reward?

My greatest reward is knowing that I have gave someone hope to pursue what they love doing.

I cannot remember the last time I posted anything on my blog. I hit a fashion roadblock with the blog, mostly because I love fashion, but I am often uninspired. I toyed with the idea of starting a new blog, and I have made it but have not written on it yet. See, the truth is all my life I have been that nice girl. The one who did not like confrontation, that sat back and watched friends and family walk all over her. I had a permanent footprint on my back for years. In the last year I have started letting go of that weak girl that I had become and have started drifting back into my former fearless big girl pants. I find now I am way more bitter about life, people, relationships, and friends. It will not take much for me to have a friend and then easily cut them off. I do not have time for people who do not care about me. Shit, I am still trying to care about my damn self. There is the other thing I hid in this blog, I love to fucking curse. I curse like a sailor. I wanted to be real on my blog, but I was once again consumed by fear of what others would think. I am not writing a blog to make friends, I am writing in order to express my feelings. So I am going to stick with the same old blog name for right now and just write whatever the hell I feel like. If it is about fashion, friends, love, my son, school, anything. You may not like it, but honestly, I don't give a shit. I still have the same values in life, but have changed my outlook. I would do anything for a friend, and still believe in love. However, I am now and until further notice, jaded.

Unfortunately life has taken over and I am feeling so out of sorts. I am in limbo on my moving so most of my entire wardrobe is packed for moving and very few pieces are not. The humidity in Florida is literally going to kill me one of these days. My trip to Maryland went great, but since I have been back it has been non-stop homework, work, and sleep. Somewhere in all of that I will find time to blog. I have been feeling not myself to thanks to my girl Yolanda over at Diva Deep In Thought for trying to help me out of my rut. She gave me some of her inspiration and thank god she did. She is a lifesaver and a breath of fresh air!!! With most of my clothes in hiding I am having a hard time feeling inspired by clothes. She pulled together this idea for colors that I never would have worn. Thanks so much girl. This weekend I wish you were in my pocket lol!

Fashion for 25th Celebration in Maryland

I turn 25 on August 29th which is this upcoming Sunday. I am a huge fan of r&b and hip hop, so this year Rock the Bells in Maryland just happened to fall on my birthday. I have wanted to go to this concert for 3 years now and finally it is working out. I wanted to make sure to look fly for my weekend trip and spent a little money to get a cute outfit to go. I will make sure to post pictures while I am up there, but for my first night in Maryland, my outfit is going to be as such:

When I first ventured into blogging, I started reading blogs by other amazing women and that is really what inspired me to get started. Not for fame or fortune, but because I love fashion and think my story could help someone. I ran across this young lady while searching through blogs and something about her automatically stood out to me. Other than her stunning beauty, she had a certain style when she wrote that made me feel comfortable. I understood her and felt in tune with what she was saying. Nichole Smith aka Nikstar is this amazing fatshionista! Her blog is http://nikstarr.blogspot.com/. I could tell by reading her blog she has inspired many through her personality, realness, beauty and just plain down to earth. I am one of those people. She agreed to let me interview her (despite my lack of experience) and I am so grateful to learn a little bit more about this wonderful lady. Without further ado, here is a little more you may not have known about Nikstar.

1. How old are you?

28, I'm a fiery Sagittarius! Which means I'm pretty straight forward and I don't sugar coat much. I'm moody and emotional and I definitely reflect that. hehe ok that was probably too much for the age question. Sorry, I ramble!

2. Have you always wanted to model?

No, actually, when I was younger, I wanted to be a singer or an actress. Then I wanted to be a teacher and maybe a lawyer cause I like to argue. Then as I got older, I decided that I would actually love to be a photographer when I grow up!

3. When did you start pursuing modeling?

Back in 2005 after I lost a significant amount of weight. I went from a size 28 to a size 20 and slowly worked my way down to an 18. I felt that was a good size to test the waters of modeling.

4. How did you start modeling?

I actually began networking through a couple of sites. I first joined modelmayhem.com to find photographers to test with and models to chat with for constructive criticism. Then I joined the plus model discussion board in which I got feedback from industry professionals! It was very helpful. They steered me in the right direction and about a year later I scored an editorial with Beauty Plus Power. I've learned that networking and connecting is very important in this small industry.

5. Have you been plus size all of your life?

Pretty much. I mean, I was a skinny kid for a lil bit, but around 8 or 9, I became heavier. I remember my sister, who's a larger beautiful girl, telling me that if I could just hold steady at the weight I was growing up that it would all balance out and I would be a brick house, meaning a curvy hour glass figure. Although I was always plus size, I never let that stop me from playing sports like volleyball, track and field and tennis!

6. Are you excited about your new campaign with Boutique Larrieux?

Yes! Absolutely! Lydia, the owner of BL, has been so gracious and kind to me. The BL campaign has given me other opportunities that may have not presented themselves had I not met her and had this chance. I love Boutique Larrieux and their mission to keep the curvy girl up to date on fashion forward trends,

7. What is an opposition you have faced? Give an example.

I'll give you a great example. I love it when people tell me that I can't do something, because I will definitely go great lengths to prove them wrong. In Jr High, I ran track and field. I didn't take it seriously, but the day that I did, I couldn't complete my lap around the track. ONE LAP! That's all the coach wanted. I complained and whined throughout the entire practice. A guy turned to me and said, "Nichole, you might as well give up. You're too fat to run track." I remember sitting at the end of the track, away from everyone else crying. My feelings were hurt. Later I had a talk with my coach and told him I was quitting because everyone thought I was a joke. There was one other big girl on the track team and everybody loved her; she was bigger than me but possessed a different attitude. I took a cue from her. I worked my ass off to complete my laps without stopping, my workouts became intense. By middle of the season, I had pushed myself so far that I became co-captain of the girls track team. I even made it to the city finals and placed second. I was beyond proud of myself and I carried that with me throughout high school when I placed in Varsity tennis my first year playing. Anything I put my mind to after that day on the track when I sat there and threw a pity party for myself, I did with 100% and I stopped making excuses for my downfalls based on my weight. Weight had NOTHING to do with it, it was all mind over matter.

8. What is one piece of advice every girl should know? (Plus-size or not)

Love yourself! I mean seriously, it's so cliche and it's the best advice anyone has ever given me. Find things that you do well and celebrate yourself! Don't pay mind to what anyone else thinks...they can't tell you how to look, how to dress, how to feel, who to be; only you can. Set the bar for yourself and continue to raise it!

9. Where do you hope to be in 5 years?

Hopefully married with a few rug rats running around. First, I would like to finish school. Education is important to me and at times I feel like a slacker for not finishing. So, in this order: school, marriage, travel, kids.

10. Who are some of the plus-size models you look up to?

I've always loved Mia Tyler. With the rise of Crystal Renn, it seems as if we have forgotten the original pioneers in the modeling industry. Mia's personal style just rocks my socks and she's a free spirit. She loves and lives life!

11. What is your favorite item of clothing or outfit?

For a while it was a denim jacket that didn't belong to me. hehe I finally gave it back. I love my blazers, I wish I had more. Right now I'm the owner of a black blazer as well as a white one. I think I overwear my blazer but I don't care, I love it!

12. What are the beauty items you cannot live without?

I absolutely cannot live without lip gloss, lip gelly, lip balm whatever you like to call it. It's very rare that I wear a full face of makeup, but I cannot go anywhere, grocery store, mail box ANYWHERE without it! Yeah, it's that bad!

Conquering Fears one Step at a Time

I got pregnant when I was 18/19 years old. It was not planned but that time of my life it was almost what I needed. My life at the time was going in the wrong direction and he saved me from falling off the edge. However, there were a lot of things that came with being a mom that I was not ready for. I did not date or do anything for the first year and a half of my sons life. When I did start dating it was awkward and difficult. My body was not the same as it was before I got pregnant and I was not sure how to dress or work my new body. I felt uncomfortable. Also came the issue of do I tell them right away or do I wait? I met more guys online than anything because of the awkwardness of dating in my area. The choices are limited.

This was only the tip of the iceberg though!

Another thing I had difficulty with is being okay with being a single mom. I was lonely and I would seek out any attention I could get and this was hard. I would never go somewhere by ourselves because I felt self-conscious. I eventually met someone who I have been with for a long time, but when me and him were apart, I almost reverted back to that same lonely desperate person. Well, we have had to part again for a little while and I feel so much more confident about being alone and doing things by myself. It feels weird still, but I am conquering those fears one at a time. For example, as a single mom I would never go out to dinner just by myself. If no one was around to go with me, I just would not go. I would miss out on great opportunities to do what I wanted because I was afraid. Being afraid seems to be a common theme in my reasons of why I do not do something. Tonight I finally conquered part of that fear. I was craving Olive Garden because it is one of my favorite places. Normally, if I could not find someone to go with me I would have sat at home moping a little because I was sad I did not go. Instead this time, since I did not have anyone to go with me, I packed up my son and we went to Olive Garden by ourselves. All it takes is one little step like that to conquer many fears! I was still a little self-conscious but we went, had a great meal, and the world did not come to an end. It was a beautiful night.

The lines of a silhouette, the shape of a well structured dress, and the tiny details in an outfit that draws the eye where it wants. These are all part of the architecture of fashion. You may not think that fashion and architecture have anything in common, but you would be surprised how much the design can be similar. Designers sometimes spend a lot of time working on one garment to make sure it fits where it is supposed to and it lays right on the body. Months of preparation from design to concept will help the designer determine if one outfit is going to be a hit or a flop. Not all make it to the cut, but each piece still deserves attention. The way a garment is sewn can determine if it flows against the curves or away. No one wants to put on a garment and notice the way it was made just does not make sense for the design. Just like in architecture, a fashion design can be similar to a blueprint. It can detail what a dress or top should fit like, it can detail how it should look (i.e. details, waistband, pleating, and darts). The blueprint of a garment is taken from that one drawing and made into a reality with the help of other departments. Also, the details can be similar to architecture as well. Like the layers of a dress can give definition to a beautiful waist. The shape of a skirt can show off the curves you are so proud to have. The lines in a print can dance on your body and entertain the eye. If you look around the fashion world there are plenty of examples of architectural fashion. Like this dress from Jibri.

I love how Jibri always incorporates interesting shapes with classic lines to create an original look.

Or this Stefani top with the cut out by the shoulder and ruffle around the bust to create volume at the top and draw the eye upwards. Amazing use of fashion architecture in this top!

High fashion designers are not afraid to push the boundaries, so why should we? Mixing and matching different shapes of clothing with prints can bring your personal style into the realm of the unimaginable. There are fashionistas who already push the edges of fashion by mixing and matching pieces that normally some may not think of wearing. Personal expression through fashion is like putting on an exhibit of your fashionable architecture.

What I have become

I do not apologize for the way I am. I feel like considering everything that has happened in my life, I am working my way to the light at the end of the tunnel quite well. I have to admit there are days where I feel like a lost puppy. I sit and think about,

"Where is my life going? What do I want to do with my life?"

Those are some of the toughest questions to figure out. I knew since I was 5 fashion was always something I was passionate for. Unfortunately because of my upbringing in a very religious household, I stifled a lot of my passion because it was not approved of. My mom encouraged me to think of realistic dreams that would support the religion. I do not blame her at all, but I can see the repercussions of my stifling now as an adult. The idea of fashion school went out the window, so did my dreams of design. I always told myself I would do it one day, but it seems like I still hold myself back. I constantly compare myself to others in the fashion world and feel so insignificant.

What is it that I have to offer??

Why does my brain cut off the flow of blood to my creative part and hold me back from excelling? I am such a perfectionist about my life I find it often stops me from pursuing many avenues because I will not live up to my expectations. I am afraid! I have been living in fear for half of my life. Now, as many who have read my blog know that I am a survivor of rape and abuse from my childhood and teen years. I am finally feeling now that I am not being held back by that. I am finally flourishing in finding out who I am. My main thing I am focusing on is being okay with having an opinion and not being nice all the time. I am ALWAYS nice. I often feel walked on because I am so nice. So how do you balance all of it? How do you balance not always being nice, being okay with imperfection, and not feeling like I don't matter? You probably may find it ironic that I struggle with being okay with imperfection when I promote it. That is my purpose with my blog. To learn to be okay with who I am and all my flaws and my closet full of baggage. We all have our struggles, what are your struggles? Where do you find comfort? I know that through my self-exploration and determination I WILL become the woman I want to be.

It was a rainy night here in southern Florida. The time was 10 pm and I was turning on the T.V. to watch the finalist competition for the MTV TJ spot. One of my favorite plus size bloggers was on the T.V. repping for us plus size girls. She looked fabulous as usual wearing a black dress, some hot shoes by Jeffrey Campbell, and some to die for earrings that everyone is now pining for. The whole plus size community was buzzing as we voted to make this plus size girls dreams come true, and in turn, some of our own dreams seem a little more reachable. I started reading Young, Fat, and Fabulous when I first started blogging a few months ago. Immediately I knew this girl was different. Her confidence, motivation and drive made her stand out. I loved her fashion sense and knew she would be going big places. This is my official congratulations to Gabi the writer of Young, Fat, and Fabulous. She just won the spot for MTV's TJ and believe it or not, made even more of a path for other plus size divas to make their spot in the world. :) Good luck!!

Does being skinny make you "not regular"?

I have been perusing through the internet and looking at fashion ideas and reading blogs. I came across some comments made by people on a brand of clothing that makes clothes for all sizes. As I was looking through the post on back to school clothes, the people were commenting on the models and their sizes. One of the comments was "They're all skinny bitches", the next "Why do all models look like they're starving??? :/ I wish that they looked like regular people...". The last comment made me think. I have been a plus size girl since I can remember, compared to other girls my age. I always felt that I was different and sometimes I think it jaded me towards girls who were thinner. My jealousy of their bodies made me want to lash out to them with my words that they were less than me. However, in my path to being happy with myself I have tried to push those ideas that I am a "real woman" and skinnier girls are no longer real. All women have different body shapes, if I want to be accepted for who I am, shouldn't I give the same respect in return? Now, I cannot condone being unhealthy and making yourself sick to be skinny. However, if you are naturally skinny than that is the body you have. Why do I have to put my own self hatred of my body on you? You did not do anything to deserve it, so why make you feel bad? These comments just reminded me that as women we need to build each other up. The she is not real because her curves are smaller or she is ugly because she wears bigger than a size 10 is just ridiculous. It is okay to be proud of having curves, it is okay to be proud of your body. It is not okay though to put others down though because they do not fit your idea of what a "real woman" looks like. It makes me sick to think my nieces are growing up in such a convoluted thinking in society. I really would like to see changes being made to make everyone feel welcome in their body. Another thing is photographers obsession with photo shopping peoples bodies to abnormal proportions. But that is for another topic!

Marc Jacobs might do "Above Average"?

There is buzz in the fatshion world that Marc Jacobs might do a plus size or as speculated "Above Average" line of clothes. Understandably this is exciting news! I love that higher end designers are starting to see the light and that there are sizes above a size 14 or even a 16. I have to give credit though that he has some styles that go up to a size 16, but they are few and far in between. This could mean some great things for fatshionistas in the future!

Finding Support in Places I did not expect

Ah the world wide web, filled with millions of people from all over the world. There are plenty of faceless names or people I have never met, but I seem to find solace with some of them recently. I have blogged about some of my struggles from my past and recently I have found strange connections to other bloggers who I identify with. Reading their experiences makes me feel not so alone down here. I honestly get weighed down thinking about everything in life. My therapist would tell you how I unload on her every other week or so. Finding these blogs as refuge, a place where I am okay with the way I feel about situations in life and that I am not alone in my feelings, has been amazing. I am inspired everyday by one of these amazing bloggers and I would love to give a shout out to some of my favorites:

Money Hungry... SMH

So last night I was at home by myself, my munchkin was spending the night at my mom's house. I decided that it was late and I was going to flip channels while I did some stretching and played with my new phone. I came across a new reality show called Money Hungry on VH1. I have watched a few reality shows on VH1 before, because it is sort of like a guilty pleasure. So the gist of the show is people who wanted to lose weight brought a friend and they put up 10,000 dollars to get into the show. Then they will work in their teams with the trainers, dieting, etc. to lose weight. Only a handful of the contestants will get their 10,000 back and one team who loses the most will win 100,000 dollars. The claims from the contestants is that they have tried all sorts of diets, worked out, fat camps, and this is their last incentive to lose weight. If this does not motivate them then nothing will is what some of the contestants were saying in their interviews. Is this what it has come down to? I cannot be mad at the people who are on the show because I am sure it may help their health and hopefully get them money/make them famous, yadda yadda. To be honest though, I had to shake my head at the whole concept. It seems more and more they are using the publicity around the body image issues going on and it is all over the place. Like in my head when I saw this show I thought, "So this is it, that fat people will only do healthy things for money. So now we are fat, but also greedy?". Maybe that is just my opinion, but the show just did not represent getting healthy, all it represented was getting skinny and rich. Should be interesting to to hear how it all turns out.

No Love like Self-Love

It recently came to my attention that I had lost something very dear to me. It was my love for myself. I am not really sure where it disappeared to, but I was sure that it was gone. How could such a tragedy happen?! How could I lose the love for the one thing that gave me life every day? It is hard to imagine, but many of women go through the same experience through their life. In all of the chaos of the world, I forgot to love myself. I would wake up in the morning, get ready for work and not give any thought about how I looked or felt. It was like I was living in a daze and could not even look at myself at times. It was hard because the little things I used to enjoy doing became a chore. I did not feel pretty and I lost pride in myself.

One day I realized that I had stopped caring about myself. That I was getting lower and lower because I felt that I was not worth taking care of. This is one of the biggest dangers I can see for women. You have to make sure you love yourself. It could be something easy that you can do to show yourself love. For me, painting my nails or putting thought into an outfit can help with my self-love. You want to take care of your body and make sure you tell yourself that you are worth it every day. I have found that by taking the extra time to take care of my body, in turn I felt happier and more confident. I started feeling better when I woke up in the morning and putting more effort into how I looked. Self-esteem and confidence come from the inside. You are the only person who can tell yourself, I am worth it. What is it that gives you a pick me up? Always tell yourself, I love you, and you will be amazed at the difference it makes.

OOTD ASOS Jeggings + ASOS Black Top + Fun= Good time

Recently I finally took the leap and bought some items from ASOS Curve like I had blogged about in a previous post. I got them just in time to wear them out on the town for my good friends 25th birthday soiree. I am all about rocking jeans with hot heels! That is one of my favorite looks for going out. Not knowing how the jeggings were going to hold up, I decided I would wear them anyways. Let me say I LOVE the jeggings!!! They were so comfortable and looked great on my legs. They stood up through the night and did not roll down or feel to tight after a few drinks. I paired them with the ASOS Curve Black Button up top and a waist belt. I loved the whole look and felt so HOT!! I even inspired one of my friends to take the plunge into the unknown and possibly get some of her own jeggings.

Now, for me to take a picture in my outfit was a huge step for me. I am still getting comfortable with seeing myself in full body pics. It is one of my hurdles I am trying to conquer. Unfortunately you cannot see the rocking heels I had on from target. I was wearing these heels with the jeggings:

All in all I had a great time. It was a crazy night but I was comfortable all night long! I definitely recommend ASOS Curve!

Sometimes the Writing is on the Wall

I am coming up on my two year anniversary at my current place of employment. I got this job as a blessing really, since I had been unemployed for 5 months when I got it and was looking at being kicked out of my house. It was a difficult time to be in, so when I was told I got hired I worked my butt off to do a great job. I am used to working in sales as I have done it most of my life. I had no problems working with customers and talking to people, so this job was going to be a piece of cake. Unfortunately, I cannot say everything has been all stars and sunshine. As employees we do not have control over what happens with the company or who your bosses are. Those of my friends who read my blog and work with me know exactly what I am talking about.

My company was bought out about 9 months ago and things have gone awry since that happened. We went from a job that is secure and happy, to unsure and stressful. A lot of people have gone through takeovers before, but some companies are just more loyal to their employees than others. I personally hate when I feel like my bosses and company are pulling the wool over my eyes, or so they think. Luckily I work with a great group of people and we are sticking together. I mean what else can we do. Other co-workers from other departments come and tell us that they heard things about us "closing" down our department and that we were "going away". I feel like I am at a magician show. The people in power want us to look at the trick while the real magic is just a slight of hand. The saddest part is that the writing is on the wall. We have seen this coming and only asked for a little notice since many of us have kids. Many of us have devoted a lot of time and energy and taking away from families and our personal lives to make unrealistic expectations happen. So who knows what is going to happen next, but I see that writing and I am not blind.

Whirlwind of a life!

I have honestly had to take a step back from blogging for a while. My life has been a crazy and chaotic cluster over the last month. A lot has gone on and I have not been able to focus on what I love. I am really enjoying reading a lot of other fabulous fashion blogs and have been feeling more inspired. Sometimes in life you have to take a step back and just let life roll on. I am currently in the process of moving and I am super excited to finally be out of my condo. Having a 5 year old who is non-stop, means constantly cleaning. In my small condo, all that means is constant mess. Now I will be in a nice large house, which will have plenty of space. I cannot wait to decorate. I have been lacking in fashion updates and there has been a lot of great fashion frenzy going on in the fa(t)shionsphere. Once I get settled, I will be more into blogging. I do have an interview with a fabu blogger coming as well as reviews and updates. I have started some volunteering for rape victims, which I will also touch on. All in all, I am still here, still chugging along and will be back in action soon!

The Never Ending Battle

I did not start writing about my past looking for sympathy. I am just another number in a statistic. There are a lot of women out there that have been affected by rape. It is scary to think that the numbers out there only reflect the rapes that were reported. I was one of the many that did not report it. At first I could not even identify it. I wish I had more education about identifying rape now that I look back. I mean of course, now it is 20/20 hindsight, but it would have been helpful. It does not even matter that you may be dating someone or married to them, no still means no. I would beg for him to stop and he often hurt me. This is not okay for someone to have to deal with. It is a scary situation to imagine for myself and even scarier to think other women go through the same or worse. There was a lot of bad repercussions from dealing with the affects of rape. Promiscuity, self-hatred, trust issues, and severe depression. To this day I still battle with the emotional scars I have. I have pursued therapy to help, which led me to speak out about it. This situation that occurred has also changed my eating habits, weight, body image. There is so much that you cannot see that goes along with a traumatic experience. I hope that I can help other women realize they are not alone. Is it a struggle everyday when I wake up? Absolutely. Is it difficult to speak about what happened and not relive moments in my head? You betcha. However, if I can help just one person to understand or recognize the issue at hand, then I have done what I set out to do. Do you know someone who was affected by rape? You may and you do not even know it. Never take for granted life and help teach your children about the dangers out there. Education and open communication are the first step to reducing the risk.

The Road is Dark and Lonely

I have worked towards building up my courage to recount this event (not in full detail) but to help others and to know YOU ARE NOT ALONE. Good luck reading**

Things were okay for a little bit after the incident. We never talked about it and it seemed almost like a bad dream. Things were not getting better, as he started to use me even more. After only a month or two, he started to try to pass me off to his friends. He would force me to do things I never even imagined doing in my life. I started to sink into depression. During this time I had hope that things would get better, he told me he loved me! How could he treat me so bad? He hit on my best friend during that time and even tried to mess around with her. I carry a lot of guilt about putting her in the situation to fall prey to him. Because I was still underage and my family did not approve, I would sneak him into my room at night. One time, he even brought a friend with him. Things only got worse and because during the time cell phones were not as big as they are now, I was able to get away for a few months. I escaped and started dating someone else. I thought that this would be the end and finally I made the right decision. However, the relationship I was in did not last long and I was left with an empty hole. I got back in contact with him and he even had tracked me down to my current job by lying about being related to me when he called my previous job. How sneaky you might be thinking. I once again should have seen the warning signs, but I didn't.

After I got back in contact with him, things only got worse. I was aware how big of a mess I was in the first time it happened. He had been trying to get me pregnant for a while and I even had gotten off birth control. I could not get on any because my mother had no idea I was fooling around. I started getting scared and telling him I did not want to have sex anymore. He would threaten me that he would tell my parents, that he knew where I lived and he owned guns. I was terrified for many reasons. What if he hurt my family? What would happen if he told them? I would stress about getting away from him every time I went home. The forcing of sex continued and often after I left I would throw up. I would cry all the time and hated sleeping in my room at my house in fear he might show up at my window. I had no idea what happened to me. I was clueless about what really was going on. I felt so used and abused. How could he love me, I asked myself again? This is not how love is supposed to feel. We never went on dates, I started getting calls from another girl claiming to be his girlfriend. I was miserable. Then my worst fear became true. He did show up at my house, he showed up in the middle of the night, he showed up with another friend. Except the only difference is this time I was not in my room, I was sleeping on the couch. This time, my step-dad saw him. When my dad called the cops I felt like finally I could get free. I finally did get free after this incident, but it was not until a little while later when I was dating someone else at a completely new job that we were talking about my ex. When I explained to him what happened and how I felt he finally made it click for me. Finally I could identify all the feelings I had and the problems that had arisen from it. Finally I knew, I had been raped.

The Tables Start to Turn

At 17 (which I told men I was 18) I was walking in the mall with my best friend where I saw a guy. I thought he was super hot, sexy, everything I wanted. The other thing I liked is he noticed me. I caught his eye. I actually got up the nerve to go talk to him and found out he was 27. We talked about getting together, maybe hanging out at his place. I tried to insinuate that it would be cool to hang out and that I was a virgin. He sort of got the hint. I was about to make the biggest mistake of my life. At this point in my life I was so confused. I thought I knew what I wanted, I felt like a failure from college, and needed purpose or someone to tell me I was doing a good job. This guy fit that purpose and I thought that I was going to be happy. I should have seen the warning signs from the beginning, but because I was not prepared to handle it, I fell easily into his trap. This guy knew what kind of girl he was looking for. An easy one, one that was naive. That was me. After a few months of dating, it was clear that he was the wrong person. I had to sneak around to see him because I was not allowed to date outside my religion. Plus, he was way older than me. The first time something happened, I should have run away. After one day I did not do what he wanted me too, he got angry with me. Being the person I am, I smarted off to him when he asked me a serious question about our relationship and my respect towards him. After I gave him my answer, it was almost in slow motion. You know I have seen women get hit on movies plenty of times, but I never expected it to happen to me. Still to this day I can play him slapping me in slow motion through my head. All it took was one hit and he disarmed me. Should I run, should I stay, who to tell, I was so confused. I made a mistake and did not leave. Of course, he was sorry. They always are. He told me he loved me and I cried. I was afraid and felt even more alone. After I left I went to work, and my current boss could not even give me the courtesy of trying to listen. I even told her what happened, but I got told to leave my problems at the door. I wish this is where it stopped, but this was just the beginning of what was to come.

And This is Where Things Get Tricky...

Needless to say, my efforts at dual enrollment failed miserably. At this point I was working at a photography studio in the local mall and it got me into a lot of trouble. There were hot guys everywhere! I would walk around the mall on lunch breaks, after work, after class, and pick up guys left and ride. I started to love the attention, but at that time was still a virgin. Being raised in the religion I was and taking an oath to not have sex before marriage, I was following the guidelines that I needed too. The love of my life that I fell in love with in 10th grade was gone and it left a huge hole in my heart. When I would walk around the mall I would pick up older men. I could not be bothered with boys! I was a tease as well, always flirting with guys and maybe letting them get to a little kissing or touching, but never took it further. I eventually stopped going to classes and dropped out of college permanently. I only completed one class. This hurt a lot because I am a perfectionist and I felt like a failure. I started working a new job at a high end fashion store and made some new friends. I still would go visit the mall though and look for guys to hit on. Now being raised in such a religious household, we did not discuss dating, men, different types of men, none of it. Needless to say, I was ill prepared for what I was about to face. Excuse me while I take a deep breath as I prepare to continue.

As the beat goes on

At the beginning of 9th grade, I was in full insecurity swing. I wore glasses at that time as well and I was dealing with horrible acne. I felt like such a loner. I had a great friend at that time, but I often felt foreshadowed by her beauty. All the guys liked her. I often was told by our guy friends and I quote, "I want a girl with your personality and her body" Yea, least to say I was never flattered by that comment. My brothers used to make fun of girls with great personalities. I hated that stereotype! In school, I would try to get boys attention but in the wrong ways. I would wear tops that showed some cleavage, hoping that would get attention. It did, but not the kind I wanted. I started to notice that it was less about my personality and more about how I looked. As I like to quote music artists from time to time, I dumbed it down as Lupe would say. I was always an overachiever through school. I always did well, and I barely had to try. In middle school I started to play off my intelligence and in high school barely even tried. I gained weight in 10th grade and hit a size 18. I got made fun of all the time by people of all sexes. It was so hurtful and I felt the pain everyday. Finally, my mom decided to put me on birth control and accutane summer of my 10th grade year. By 11th grade my acne was a lot better and I was gaining confidence. I joined the weight lifting class at school and dropped the weight. I was down to a 14 again and it felt so good. I was getting attention from boys and men now. My confidence peaked and I was on fire. There was a lot of other turmoil going on still in my life. I was still struggling with the religion, still dealing with feelings of inadequacy, stressing about friends and trying to find validation. At that point, I dual enrolled at college while I will still in my senior year. This is where everything changes.

And the saga continues

Until I reached 5th grade, I was able to stay at the same size through elementary school. I was a lot more athletic back then too, as I won 2nd place in my schools jump rope competition. The summer of 5th grade started most of my issues in my life. I hit puberty around that time (even though I had boobs since I was in 3rd grade) and my size jumped from about a 10 to a solid 14. I developed stretch marks on my legs because my thighs grew and I put on weight. During that summer I spent a month with my brothers at my dad's house in GA. This was probably the biggest mistake and the major downfall in my life. I did not have a relationship with my father at that time, and had honestly only seen him one time or talked to him one time since him and my mom got divorced. I would have more to tell about that experience the summer of 5th grade, unfortunately I do not remember most of it. Sometimes when things happen to us that are severely traumatic, our mind blocks it out to save us from reliving the pain over and over. I know that when I got back, my mother said I had a nervous breakdown and I was never the same girl from that moment on. What I did not know, is how different I was going to be. Whatever happened snowballed into a mess of problems through my later years. Through middle school my weight fluctuated, from a 12-16. I had to ride my bike or walk to school which kept me a least a little active. I had my first boyfriend, but that did not last long since he decided he liked my best friend better. During those three years in middle school, I suffered from severe depression. I often would sit up till 2 am in the morning, crying on my bed with my parents asking me what was wrong and all I could figure out was that I was just unhappy. Nothing triggered these spouts of depression. I would just find myself feeling very sad, alone, and hating myself. I turned to food at that time as an emotional support because it made me happy. By the end of 8th grade, my weight had jumped to a solid 16.

I was born in Naples, Florida on August 29, 1985. My mother was from Miami and so was her side of the family. My father was from GA and to be honest I am not sure where he was from originally. I was always a little chubby as a baby, but not a big baby by any means. I had 2 older brothers, my oldest being 5 years older than me and my other being only 2 or so years ahead. When I was a baby we moved around, and my dad officially left the picture when I was 4. My mom and dad got a divorce and that was the beginning of the abandonment issues I would say. My two brothers and me stayed with my mom here in Florida, living with my grandfather. My grandfather was a huge influence on my younger life. You see the special thing with me and him was that we had the same birthday. We were both born on August 29. He used to refer to me as his birthday present (but also used to refer to me as his little chubby girl in later years). My grandmother was still alive at that time, but she was developing Alzheimer and often forgot many things. I used to get ice cream from her like three times in a row because she could not remember if I had any or not. Looking back now I see the error in my ways, but at the time I loved it. My oldest brother used to yell at me and tell me to stop getting ice cream because I was going to get fat and it was wrong. I never listened to him. I am jumping a little bit ahead though. My mom got remarried to my step-dad when I was 5 and my whole life changed. My step-dad was a great guy, just young and was not prepared for what he was taking on. A single mother of 3 children is a large task. My dad at this point was pretty much out of the picture and I never saw him or talked to him. My parents became very religious which made things a little more stressful. As I got older, my weight had always been an issue. My mother being a plus size woman and most of the women in my family being big, I knew that I was almost destined to struggle with weight issues. I never noticed a huge issue with my self-esteem right away. I was confident for the most part, made friends easily, was not afraid to speak my mind, until 2nd grade. Then I noticed I was bigger than most of the girls. I started getting made fun of for being bigger, the boys did not like me liked they liked the other girls. Plus being in a extremely religious family made me ostracized even more because I did not celebrate holidays and was not involved in school activities. At this point I started dieting and doing Richard Simmons to lose weight. So it began.

A Change is Gon Come

Sam Cooke could not be more right! At this point in life, I feel I was going in the wrong direction with my blog. It may not look like it from the exterior or by how I carry myself, but I have been through a lot for a 24 year old girl. Surprising enough as it is, I have done my best to come out on top, but it has been hard. So I have decided that the purpose of my blog is going to change. There are plenty of amazing bloggers out there talking about being plus sized and fashion. I think they can handle that. Not saying that it will not be a part of my blog since it is a part of the struggle I have dealt with, but I feel I have more insight to offer. I like to consider myself an open book now. It has not always been that way and a lot of what I dealt with is hard to talk about. However, I want to help women. We are strong and often things happen that bring down our self-esteem and self-worth. I want to encourage women to become better. Whether skinny or fat, whether poor or rich, no matter who you are. I hope you can come here, read about someone else who might have been in the same situation you are right now or maybe you felt like I did. I want you to know that you are not alone, you have a friend in me. I may not know you, you may not know me yet, but I am here. Talk to me.

You will see some changes in the layout of my blog and on the topics. I want to reach out to all women! Plus Size girls, I love you, but I have to expand my reach. Be on the lookout for my first blog on the new topic, why I decided to write about other things. It will give a brief synopsis of what I have been through! Here is my heart and soul, be gentle.

Can't We All Just Get Along?

I felt the need to blog about this topic because I am still new into the plus size and in general blogging community. Already there has been some tension that I have read in between blogs over the last month. What made me more excited in the last couple of years about where plus size women were going in the future was the fact that we were finally sticking up for one another. When the plus size community was getting poked and prodded with criticism we rose up together to fight the naysayers. However, current events and conversations lately have almost struck a division in the plus size community. It is disheartening honestly! Why are we judging others about what they decide to do with their weight? Why look down on what others decide to do with their lives? We have all been on the end of criticism at one point in our life or another. We all know how it feels to be ostracized and persecuted. I would think that especially because we are trying to change a world's view on what plus size is and means, that we could try to keep it together! Errggg I must say! Hopefully thinks we all work out in the end, but here when it comes to me, I support all of my fellow plus size and non-plus size women the same! It is tough to be a woman just in general. It is even harder when dealing with the negativity towards plus size. We are constantly on the defense it seems like. So I ask just please, can we all just get along?

Taking part in the BIG FAT Summer Challenge

Considering I live in sunny Florida, I think this challenge is perfect for me to partake in. The rules are pretty simple and I can even make up some of my own. This challenge was put to the readers of Return To Sender: A Fat Girls Letters to the World. I am ready to take on this challenge head first, and in the meantime even get over my fear of photographs of myself (since I have to photo document my efforts as proof). The challenge goes from June 1^st to July 31^st. So plenty of time to take advantage or every opportunity to knock this challenge out of the park.

Review: Smoothie King 2-Part Cleanse & Flush

Ever since I had my son back in 2004, my stomach has not been the same. I get nauseous easily and on a daily basis. My stomach tends to sit high and feel hard at times even if I have not eaten. I have been trying to figure out ways to help it go down, and get back to somewhat normal. Now the pills themselves do not taste the greatest, obviously as most vitamins don't. I hate swallowing pills as well, but these are not horrible. Make sure to take them with a large glass of water. This is what they look like, as there are two you take.

I am not doing a special diet while on them or exercising any more than normal. I will blog my progress at day 15 and day 30. I will make sure to let you know of any strange side effects and any benefits. I hope it does help and have great expectations.

Ever since I was 13, I have hated getting my picture taken. I always looked bloated or rounder than I thought I looked and hated actually seeing it frozen forever. It was proof that I was chubby. My round face hid no flaws! Especially since my weight fluctuated my entire life. I was always around a size 14 from puberty, but had moments where I would get close to a 12 or shoot up to a size 18. I only have a handful of pictures now of me during high school and middle school because I hated seeing my weight next to my skinny friends. I would always look at them and think, skinny, skinny, skinny, oh yep there is me the "fat friend". Ever since my weight has gone up in the recent years, I have pretty much stopped taking pictures. It is sad, because there are a lot of times where I may want to remember an event, I refuse to step in front of a camera. I am at the biggest I have been in my life. I wear a comfortable size 20 (insert gasp here lol). My body just has not been the same since I had my son. My metabolism, eating habits, and just body shape has completely changed. I remember being 18 years old at a size 14 and thinking I was huge. Obviously I look back at that size now and know I was hot. Despite the negative effects that have come from me gaining weight, there are some positive points from it happening. Finally in my life I understand that bigger is not bad. I can be curvy and beautiful. Where is my time machine so I can go back and slap that girl who was 18 and thought she was huge!? I want to be healthy which is understandable to anyone. But if you asked me at 18 if I wanted to be skinny I would have said yes and told you all about my efforts. Now, at 24 if I was asked that question I would have a completely different answer. I am proud to be curvy, I am proud to be a BBW! I am working towards loving my body and even overcoming my fear of photographs. :) We all have our own vices, our things that are hard to overcome. Overcoming years and years of brainwashing that big is bad is my first step.
